about

Words of Paradise was inspired by the Renaissance Dutch linguist Johannes Goropius Becanus, who thought he had shown the Flemish dialect Brabantic to be the language spoken in Paradise. The brass instruments imitate the sound of this language, whilst in a metaphor for leaving paradise, the harmony drifts from central unison to the distant relationships of the outermost circles of the graphic score. The piece is performed by Zinc & Copper: Robin Hayward (microtonal tuba, tuning vine), Hilary Jeffery (trombone) and Elena Kakaliagou (horn). This recording from 2016 was mastered by Ralf Meinz and was released as a picture disc on Edition Telemark in February 2019.

In 2012 he invented the Hayward Tuning Vine, partly out of a desire to visualise the harmonic space implicit within the microtonal tuba. ... more
